Rube In The City

February 18, 2012
Another weird one today. A girl on the street told me I looked stupid. I’m still not sure what it is about the city that gives people the kind of confidence to insult strangers. Nor what makes them think cowboy boots, jean shorts and a denim shirt look stupid. I suppose it’s one of those odd cultural differences that arises from the parochiality of what’s acceptable in fashion. Had hollandaise sauce for the first time, delicious, can’t wait to tell Nan about it.

Saw a strange creature with the face of a man and the body of a woman on Karangahape Road today. It asked me if I was looking for business. I didn’t enquire as to what its trade was as I had a feeling it wouldn’t be a service I was interested in—my best guess so far is magic shows for children’s parties, reaching into a hole and finding a rabbit maybe—and carried on my way without a response. I felt rude. Perhaps I will apologise to it tomorrow.

Quiet day. Decided to give up on looking for tractor repair work, there doesn’t seem to be many positions available in Central Auckland. Did see an advertisement for a Retail Assistant at somewhere called sass & bide. I’m a people person so that seems like a job I could do. With any luck they’ll have a range of denim and cowboy boots that I can specialise in.
